Podpoems

A Podcasting Workshop for Poets

Because Poetry is a Spoken Art

Back in the days of the troubadours, poetry wasn’t written .. it was spoken.  Through the internet, there are ever-increasing opportunities for poets and writers to get their words, in their own voice, out to a wider audience. Podpoems is a one day skills based hands-on workshop to take you through the whole process of producing a podcast  ..  starting with recording your voice, editing on computer and uploading to the internet.

At the end of the day you’ll have a ten minute mp3 recording of your own work to take home and post on your website.

And you’ll have all the skills you need to:

  • choose a recording device and microphone
  • download free editing software (which will work on both PC and Mac)
  • record your work
  • dub (transfer) it into your computer
  • edit out the out-takes, save the final version
  • save it as an mp3
Participants can work on either PC or Mac computers during the workshop.

(Time permitting, we’ll also talk about the many ways to post your material on the web, using Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and other social media applications).

(Note that you don’t have to be a published poet to attend ..  bring whatever you’ve written, however grandoise or modest.  Prose and non-fiction is fine too.  The skills you learn will be a good foundation for whatever kind of podcasting you want to do.)

Podpoems is produced and facilitated by Victoria Fenner, writer and sound artist.  For the past two decades Victoria has worked as a broadcaster in Canada and the United States, and is now focussing mostly on internet and social media.  She takes a creative approach towards sound making, using her microphone to gather sounds, and her computer to organize them in ways which reflect the way she hears the world .

In addition to her own compositions, she has also created sound art anthologies of artists across Canada which have been played on radio stations across the world.  She is also the founder of the Full Moon Audio Art Camp, a gathering of artists who spend a week in the wild areas of Canada producing new electronic sound works (Full Moon has been on the wane since 2003, but will be back in the summer of 2010)

Podpoems is co-sponsored by New Adventures in Sound Art,  a non-profit organization that produces performances and installations spanning the entire spectrum of electroacoustic and experimental sound art.  NAISA has a multidisciplinary approach to sound and works with artists of all disciplines, including writers.
